Energy is complex.

Consilient Energy works with organizations facing complex, consequential energy needs by bringing together the knowledge, structure, judgment, and execution required to understand the whole and act on it effectively.

A consilient approach

Complexity

Complexity becomes manageable with structure.

Enterprise energy is best considered and managed as a complex system comprised of interacting and dependent components.

Energy consumption, cost, risk, and opportunity emerge from interactions among facilities, operations, markets, tariffs, contracts, technologies, regulation, suppliers, geography, and business priorities. Decisions made and activities undertaken in one part of the system can create consequences elsewhere.

Treating these dimensions separately can create gaps, conflicting decisions, missed opportunities, avoidable risk, and unnecessary cost. Avoiding active management because the whole appears too complex carries consequences of its own.

The answer lies in effective structure.

Consilient Energy approaches energy as an interconnected system: understanding the relevant dimensions broadly, identifying the relationships that matter, and creating the structure required to make complexity intelligible and manageable.

Consilience

Consilience is the unification of knowledge.

Many of the most important advances in human understanding have come from recognizing common structures across things that had previously been considered separately.

Consilience describes that act of unification.

It goes beyond assembling different specialties or considering a problem from several perspectives. It seeks to bring relevant knowledge together deeply enough to create a coherent understanding of the system itself.

Technical, economic, operational, market, regulatory, financial, and strategic knowledge each reveal part of the picture. Considered together, they can reveal relationships, constraints, risks, and opportunities that remain difficult to see from within any one discipline.

Consilient Energy was built around this idea.

Consilient works across domains because decision impacts cross domain boundaries.

Frameworks

Effective structure begins with a robust framework.

Complex problems cannot be addressed reliably through intuition, accumulated information, or experience alone.

A robust framework establishes what must be understood, how relevant information should be organized and analyzed, how it will support decision-making, and how decisions will be translated into action.

The framework must fit the general nature of the problem without becoming rigid. Its structure should remain reliable as conditions change, while allowing inputs, assumptions, priorities, and application to adapt.

This creates consistency without sacrificing judgment.

It also creates transparency. Assumptions can be examined. Decisions can be understood. Results can be measured against expectations. New information can be incorporated, and the approach can improve as experience accumulates.

Consilient Energy builds frameworks to make complex problems intelligible, decisions more reliable, and execution more disciplined.

Judgment + Execution

Structure creates reliability. Judgment and execution create results.

Frameworks provide structure and direction, but consequential decisions still require judgment.

Judgment is formed through repeated exposure to varied, related, and consequential circumstances by having seen what succeeds, what fails, which conditions matter, and how outcomes change as circumstances change.

That experience creates pattern recognition: warning signals, indications of opportunity, and insight into which facts deserve the greatest weight when uncertainty remains.

But sound judgment and good decisions are only part of the work.

Results depend on execution.

Consilient Energy approaches execution with the same rigor applied to analysis: clear responsibilities, deliberate planning, effective governance, disciplined processes, transparent reporting, measurement, feedback, and continuous improvement.

Good thinking should lead to good decisions.

Good decisions should lead to disciplined action.

And disciplined action should produce measurable results.

Engagement

We seek to understand deeply before we prescribe.

Effective engagement begins with inquiry.

Consilient Energy invests substantial effort in understanding the client’s objectives, circumstances, operating environment, data, constraints, and organizational context. We ask questions, seek different perspectives, and examine the relationships among the parts of the system before determining how the work should proceed.

The quality of that inquiry should create value in itself by exposing assumptions, clarifying needs, identifying missing information, and revealing risks or opportunities that may not previously have been visible.

From that understanding, we develop and communicate a framework for the work: how we understand the problem, what we believe matters, how we propose to address it, and why.

We seek client and stakeholder input early and thoughtfully so that relevant knowledge, operating realities, and constraints are incorporated before they become downstream problems.

Once the approach is established, it becomes a disciplined work plan with clear responsibilities, visible progress, regular communication, meaningful measurement, and continuous attention to improvement.

Areas of Work

We work across the energy system.

Consilient Energy organizes its work systematically across five decision domains, within the context of enterprise objectives and constraints and through a unified enterprise energy strategy.

Energy Data & Information

Compile, organize, and manage the complete and accurate energy data and information required for sound decision-making.

Markets, Supply & Risk

Understand and manage energy-market exposure, supply decisions, and risk through robust frameworks.

Utility Service & Rates

Understand and manage the utility service, rate structures, rules, and costs that affect enterprise operations and economics.

Facility Energy & Operations

Understand how facilities and operations create energy demand and where change can create meaningful value.

Experience

Built from consequential experience and participation, not mere observation.

Consilient Energy was founded by George Deljevic after three decades working across the energy system: from engineering and project development to power and natural gas markets, risk and valuation, business formation, operating leadership, commercial strategy, enterprise energy services, data and technology, sustainability, and distributed energy.

That experience has included responsibility for risk, structuring, and portfolio management for an $800 million retail energy business; leadership of a 40-person commercial organization generating approximately $120 million in term gross margin; building and leading multiple energy businesses; and developing an enterprise energy services business that reached profitability in its second year.

Consilient was built from that breadth of experience: not only analyzing energy, but making consequential decisions, building systems and businesses, leading organizations, and being accountable for results.
